This Drummond Street project took a classic Ballarat Central double-fronted bungalow back to its studs and gave it a completely new life. At the front, the original hallway remains, with restored cornices, timber floors, and doorways leading off to the bedrooms. Everything behind it was demolished and rebuilt. An old extension, garage and a standalone flat all came down, the internals were completely gutted, and the existing framework, subfloor, roofing and external cladding were all reconstructed from scratch, along with a new standalone garage. The rear extension is where the design makes its statement. A striking angular gable window anchors the new living wing, its Monument aluminium-framed glazing catching the last light of the day. Vertical Monument cladding wraps the exterior, offset by a run of raw timber pergola beams that frame the deck and lead out to the yard. Inside, the palette shifts to something warmer. A vaulted ceiling and a run of skylights flood the new kitchen and living area with natural light, falling across timber floors and a waterfall stone island bench. A freestanding wood fire, set on a solid Krause Ghost brick feature plinth, anchors the space for the colder months. It’s one of a number of custom details built throughout the home. Through the hallway, the main suite delivers a walk-in robe and an ensuite finished in warm stone-look tile, brass tapware, and a double vanity: a quiet, considered space. From heritage bones to a bold contemporary addition, this is a beautifully spacious, well thought out family home that will grow with them for years to come. It was delivered on a tight timeframe, built on close teamwork between site and trades from start to finish.
